The Press Council of India was first set up in 1966 by Parliament on the recommendations of the first press commission with the aim to protect the freedom of the press and the preservation and development of press ethics in India.

The new Council works under the Press Council Act, 1978.
It is a statutory, quasi judicial authority functioning as a watchdog of the press, for the press and by the press.
It adjudicates the complaints against and by the press for violation of ethics and for violation of the freedom of the press respectively.
The Press Council is headed by a President, a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, by convention.
Members of Press council of India
The Council has 28 members with different designation:
20 serve the press and are elected by press organisations/news organizations and are acknowledged and informed by the Council.
5 members are nominated from the two Houses of Parliament.
3 represent cultural, literary and legal fields as nominees of the Sahitya Academy, University Grants Commission and the Bar Council of India.
Members serve for a term of three years on the Board.
A retired member shall be eligible for no more than one term of renomination.
