      Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP)

      Context:

      PM recently inaugurated the 7500th Janaushadhi Kendra under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).

      About PMBJP

      • PMBJP is a campaign launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses through special kendras known asĀ Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana Kendra.
      • Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra is a dedicated outlet for the sale of janaushadhi (generic drug).
      • Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India: BPPI is the implementing agency and society registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
      • BPPI is under the administrative control of the Dept. of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals, and Fertilizers.
      • It coordinates procurement, supply, and marketing of generic drugs through Janaushadhi Kendra, with the support of all Pharma PSUs.

      Generic drug

      • A generic drug is a medication created to be the same as an already marketed brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use.
      • These similarities help to demonstrate bioequivalence, which means that a generic medicine works in the same way and provides the same clinical benefit as the brand-name medicine.
