      Context:

      On the occasion of World Environment Day (5th June), the government announced implementation of the Nagar van scheme to develop 200 Urban Forests across the country in next fi ve years.

      About:

      • The scheme will fi ll the gap between the cities and villages in terms of having their own forest cover.
      • The Nagar Van will be built either on the existing forest land or another vacant land in the cities across India offered by the local bodies.
      • Under the Nagar Van Scheme, Urban forests will be developed in 200 cities in its fi rst phase.
      • The Warje Urban Forest (Pune, Maharashtra) will be considered as a role model.

      International Day of Forests

      • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st March as the International Day of Forests in 2012.
      • The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests.
