Post upgradation this would be the sixth National park of Assam.
The Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve, which is also spreads across the coal- and oil rich districts of Upper Assam (Dibrugarh, Tinsukia and Sivasagar).
It is also last patch of rainforest within the boundaries of Assam. It is also referred as amazon of the East.

The Assam government has decided in July 2020 to upgrade Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary into a national park.
