      Project Tiger

      Project Tiger was launched in 1973 by the government of India in cooperation with WWF. It was a program for the protection of Tiger also known as the Tiger Protection Program and was firstly started in the palamau tiger reserve by GOI.

      Indian Tiger (Royal Bengal Tiger)

      India is home to 80% of the global Tiger population.

      Umbrella species -Tiger

      By rescuing them we save everything beneath their ecological umbrella i.e. everything connected to them.
      IUCN red list- endangered.
      Danger to the tiger in India – Deforestation, Hunting.
      At first, we can see the population of tiger in 1900 – about 40,000 tigers.
      Only after 72 years, there is a sharp decline in the Tiger population in 1972 – 1800 Tiger left.

      It is very necessary for the government to launch a program that protects Tiger species.
      Then in 1973 after seeing the sharp decline in the population of Tiger the Government of India launched Project Tiger (Tiger Protection Program )

      Project Tiger was mainly started with the following objectives:

      • To ensure the maintenance of the population of Tiger for cultural and economic scientific and ecological balance.
      • To preserve the area of biological importance as a national heritage for the benefit of education and enjoyment of the people.
      • Conservation of the species like Tiger which is endangered .
      • Securing the lives of tribal people living in the in and around tiger reserve.
      • Tiger Protection Force was set up by the government to combat poaching.

      Tiger Reserve:

      • On the basis of scientific and objective criteria critical Tiger Habitat area established.
      • In consultation with an expert committee, these areas are not defined by the state government. It aims at promoting coexistence between wildlife and human activity during recognition of livelihood, social and cultural rights of local people.
      • On the basis of scientific and objective criteria of the limits of such areas are determined with the help of gram sabha and expert.
      • No alterations in the boundary of Tiger Reserve without Recommendation of National Tiger conservation authority and the approval of the National Board of wildlife.
      • No state government denotifies tiger reserve except in public interest with the approval of NTCA.
      • The Amendment Act of 2006 provides for the constitution of statutory authority known as National Tiger conservation authority to add in the implementation of measures for the conservation of tiger.
