The full form of EWS is Economically Weaker Section. Those in general category and having an annual income of less than Rs. 8 lakhs and not belonging to any other reserved category such as SC , ST , OBC is termed as EWS.
A candidate whose family income is more than the prescribed limit (8 lakhs) will be considered as a candidate from the general category but not from the EWS category.
Criteria for EWS:
Family income must be less than Rs. 8lakh per annum
Less than 5 acres of agricultural land.
Less than 1000 sq. ft residential flat’s area.
Residential plot’s area should be less than 100/200 sq. yards
103rd amendment (EWS) on Change to Constitution:
The Aggregated Act amended in Article 15. It added a reservation clause, which can be used by Individuals belonging to EWS which are not covered by any of the existing schemes of reservations in SC, ST, and OBC.
Now the State has the power to make any special provision For supporting any economically weaker sections of the population. In fact, the Government Is admitted Making provision for the allocation of up to 10 percent of seats for those who when admitted Educational institutions, including private institutions of education, whether funded or not the Government, except for the educational minority institutions.
This reservation would be up to 10 percent added to existing reservations. The Act also required changes to Section 16 of the Constitution.
