Long ago there was a devil’s king called Hiranyakashyap. He had a son whose name was Prahlad, and a sister named Holika. The devil’s king is believed to have had the blessings of Lord Brahma. This blessing meant he could not be killed by any man, animal or weapon. This blessing turned into a curse for him. He ordered the kingdom he was ruling to worship him instead of god. Following this, except for his son, Prahlad, all the people began to worship him. Instead of God, Prahlad refused to worship his father as he was a true Lord Vishnu believer. When the devil’s king saw his disobedience, he and his sister planned to kill Prahlad.
He had made her sit in the fire with his son in lap, where Holika had been burned and Prahlad had come out alive. This suggested that, due to his loyalty, he was protected by his Lord. People thus began to celebrate Holi as the triumph of good over evil.
Kids love playing with colors ussing pichkaris, buckets and balloons filled with colored water. Holi celebrations begin with the Holika Dahan ritual to honor the burning of Holika, the evil demon, and Lord Vishnu’s protection of Prahlad from that fire. People collect wood and burn a bonfire and celebrate by singing songs around it.
